Large hand carved Stella - made before the RomansExplore the Copán Ruins, they have been a major source of information about the ancient Maya civilization. UNESCO declared the Copán ruins a World Heritage site in 1980. There are five basic areas of interest. The Ball Court, The Great Plaza, The hieroglyphic stairway, the acropolis and the tunnels. Although the park is enclosed the legacy of the Maya can be found throughout the Valley, Las Sepulturas site forms part of Th"PAC" Proyecto Arquelogico de Copán. Los Sopos commonly referred to as the “Birthing Place” a very small site on the hilltops over looking the Copán Valley studies suggest that the Mayan women would go there to give birth.
