 Unique
Plants:
Botanical Name: Aristolochia elegans
Common Name: Dutchman's Pipe
Family: Aristolochiaceae
Origin: Brazil
Aristolochia is comprised of about 350 species of woody-stemmed, twining and
scrambling vines, grown for foliage and flowers. The name comes from the Greek words
for best, aristos, and delivery, lochia, which refer to the ancient belief
that these plants aided in childbirth because the flowers resembled a human
fetus in the womb. The flowers have an S-shaped calyx with an inflated base,
resembling the shape of a Dutch pipe and hence the common name. The maroon and white marbled flowers
are quite striking. This species is native to Brazil, but has naturalized in
many warm regions including Florida.
Interesting Facts about this plant: The flowers of most Aristolochia emit a
powerful stench, which smells like rotting meat. Female flies are attracted
to the smell to lay eggs and inadvertently pollinate the flower. The flowers
lure the flies by smell and color and trap them. When pollination is
complete, the flies are released, laden with pollen, to be trapped again
elsewhere.
