Bill Casselman's story
Coming to visit Copán Ruins was a
dream come true, first stirred in me by a magazine article during WW II. It
stated that ancient ruins were found in Central America. WOW, at
age eight that was a dream!
At age 50 an
article in National Geographic (River of Ruinas) started me and my
buddies on a whirl wind of adventure travels over 50 ancient sites by
horse back, boat, private plane, canoe and on foot.
I
started visiting Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras; all the way into
Columbia. Now don't think I was just looking for a cheap place to
stay and hibernate. Not so. It started out as an
archeological exploration. Sounds simple. But then you toss
in orchids, passion fruit, monkeys, Iguana (big), gold mines (deep and
wet), rain forests (fantastic), diving off water falls, caves (for
getting lost), learning to drink beer (no water) . . . oh, yeah, being
blessed by San Semone (at least he drank half the rum after spitting
the other half on me). And being chased by quite a few of the
above. I chose to settle down (not totally) in Honduras.
Why? Because I could afford to with most of the above
available to me. I will admit that as I have grown a tad bit
older, I'm just more selective.
My interest in
ancient ruins was augmented by the surroundings where they were
located. Quite frankly, it was hard not to be fascinated by the
variety of trees, birds, orchids and the people living off the
land. I was fortunate to be given an opportunity to donate two
years working in the ruins. Little did I know that was a turning
point in the discoveries made, and the people involved.
